The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends intramuscular penicillin G benzathine as the preferred medication for treating primary, secondary, latent, and non-neurologic forms of tertiary syphilis.7

BICILLIN® L-A is the only formulation of intramuscular penicillin G benzathine that is FDA-approved for the treatment of syphilis. 10,12

 

Indications for BICILLIN® L-A include: 2

  • Syphilis
  • Infections due to penicillin-G-susceptible microorganisms susceptible to the low and very prolonged serum levels common to this particular dosage form
  • Mild-to-moderate infections of the upper respiratory tract due to susceptible streptococci, including streptococcal pharyngitis
  • Prophylaxis to prevent recurrence of rheumatic fever and/or chorea
BICILLIN C-R

Indications for BICILLIN® C-R include:

  • Moderately severe infections due to penicillin-G-susceptible microorganisms that are susceptible to serum levels common to this particular dosage form, including the following infections: 3
    • Moderately severe to severe infections of the upper respiratory tract, scarlet fever, erysipelas, and skin and soft-tissue infections due to susceptible streptococci
    • Moderately severe pneumonia and otitis media due to susceptible pneumococci
      • NOTE: This formulation should not be used in the treatment of venereal diseases, including syphilis. 2,3,5,6
